The ÖBB Rail Cargo Group has revealed that it has completed modernisation work on the transport container terminal in Přerov-Horní Moštěnice in the Czech Republic, and the hub is now open for business.

After carrying out construction work at the terminal for the last 16 months, ÖBB boasts that the site now has double the space, greater capacity and more modern infrastructure.

The award-winning freight company believes that this upgrade consolidates the terminal’s role as a key logistics hub in Central Europe.

Prior to the work being carried out, the terminal had experienced long-standing problems due to its limited space, with inadequate capacity for handling and insufficient access to individual tracks.

Now the site is around 17,100 m² bigger, and has a new total area of around 36,000 m².

Handling areas and storage areas have been increased in size, and the company has also commissioned new handling equipment and has improved access to tracks.

The freight terminal now boasts a capacity of around 3,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEU), which improves the quality of shipment handling and offers more flexibility for its freight customers.

The Přerov hub is now in a stronger position as a distribution centre in Central Moravia, and has efficient connections to both road and rail networks.

It plans to develop new rail connections to the ports of Koper and Rijeka and to strengthen intermodal routes in Central Europe.

The ÖBB Rail Cargo Group hopes that the terminal’s expansion will help to shift freight transport from road to rail. This modal shift is beneficial to the environment, helping to reduce CO₂ emissions and relieve the burden on road infrastructure.
