With the summer holidays soon upon us, the Spa Valley Railway in Kent and East Sussex is ideal for a nostalgic journey through the glorious High Weald.

Travelling 5 miles between Tunbridge Wells West in Kent and Eridge in East Sussex, steam and diesel trains haul vintage rolling stock for families to enjoy steam, scenery, and family adventure. Relaxing in heritage carriages while enjoying beautiful countryside views, visitors can enjoy memorable days out with vintage charm.

The attraction for families is that when the railway is operating to its Green timetable, there is no charge for children under 15 when they travel with a fare-paying adult, nor for dogs.

As well as travelling along the full length of the line, train tickets allow visitors to hop on and off the train during their journey. The train starts from Royal Tunbridge Wells, but there are other places to visit, such as Groombridge, where there is a play park near Groombridge Station, Eridge, and the sandstone outcrops at High Rocks, where there are scenic countryside walks.

To make the day even more enjoyable, the railway runs several popular dining experiences, such as traditional Afternoon Tea, Cream Teas, hearty lunches, as well as speciality favourites including the Kent Cheese Train.

There is also a full programme of seasonal experiences, where visits to nearby vineyards can bring extra sparkle, including to Birchden Vineyard in Groombridge and Wildwood Vineyard in Eridge.

Trains have a bar or buffet car on board, which serves hot, cold, and alcoholic drinks, and light refreshments. There are also kiosks at Groombridge and Eridge, which sell tea, coffee, and ice cream.

Train tickets cost £16 for Adults, £15 for Seniors over 60, and children aged up to 15 travel free. Tickets can be purchased from the ticket offices on the day of travel or purchased online through the Spa Valley Railway’s website.

Special events at the railway earlier this year included a Dinosaur Weekend in January and a Beer Festival in March.
