The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has launched an investigation into an incident that occurred on the 7th May 2026.

The dangerous occurrence occurred at Todmorden, West Yorkshire, at around 22:28.

At the time of the incident, the driver of an out-of-service Northern train was given permission by the signaller to move forward towards the next signal.

However, the train was standing with the driving cab beyond the signal, resulting in an uncontrolled movement.

Once the driver realised, the train was brought to a stop close to Todmorden Viaduct Junction, and around 12 seconds later, another Northern service passed through the junction at 45 mph.

Luckily, there were no injuries or damages.

The investigation will examine the series of events leading up to the incident, including influencing factors, the functioning of signalling systems, management, training, risks, and underlying factors.
