Dapol is assessing samples of its new O Gauge models of PFA / KFA wagons that were unveiled at the recent Guild O Gauge Wigan Summer Show.

At the show, a GB Railfreight (GBRf) Class 66 No. 66709 Sorento MSC fitted with Dapol’s Spatial sound system hauled the wagons, with the rear-most wagon carrying two containers in a Maersk livery. The O Gauge models of PFA / KFA wagons were originally announced at an O Gauge Get Together on the Severn Valley Railway in 2024.

A fleet of KFA wagons was built for TIphook by Rautaruukki in Finland starting in 1988, with the first batch running on Gloucester GPS bogies, and later ones on VNH-1 bogies, with an eventual fleet total of 200 wagons. Originally designated as PFA wagons, at first they were used for carrying steel beams and moving contaminated spoil from Chatham in low-height containers.

Later, they were used on intermodal and Binliner services, and for transporting aluminium ingots. They are currently in use with Freightliner, DB Cargo, GBRf, and Network Rail, which uses them on rail head treatment trains, weedkilling, and transporting long-welded rails.

The new models will cost £80 and represent versions with both GPS and VNH-1 bogies. They are suitable for use with Dapol’s O Gauge containers, and are fitted with a Lenz-style pocket, enabling them to be used without the need to fit scale couplings. Proposed models include:

  • Tiphook Yellow with GPS bogies, blue body.
  • Tiphook Yellow with GPS bogies, blue body unnumbered.
  • Tiphook Blue with GPS bogies, blue body.
  • Tiphook Blue with GPS bogies, blue body unnumbered.
