Infrastructure solutions company Costain has secured a place on a framework agreement as one of three suppliers to Transport for London (TfL) for upgrading rail infrastructure across the city.

The contract covers both the design and construction of major improvements to the railway infrastructure throughout London, including upgrade work at South Kensington tube station and implementation of Transport for London’s programme to provide step-free access at stations.

The total contract value is approximately £700m, split between the three suppliers, with projects awarded over two years, with the option of a further two-year extension.

Costain has extensive experience in delivering complex infrastructure programmes in the transportation sector. Its role in this framework agreement will be to provide a range of best-in-class services, among which are the design, engineering, programme delivery, and supply chain management.

The contract extends Costain’s record of delivering complex infrastructure solutions for Transport for London, which has included using a combination of modern methods of construction and new technology to upgrade the A40 Westway, one of London’s busiest routes.

Costain is currently involved in several joint ventures for the construction of HS2, including with Siemens Mobility to provide a high-voltage electrical network for the complete HS2 line, and the Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture for the construction of eight vent shafts and headhouses to provide ventilation and emergency access to HS2 tunnels underneath London.
