After unveiling its first new Airo train in February, US rail operator Amtrak has now released a short video giving more insight into the new fleet.

The video features members of the team who are working on developing and bringing the Airo jtrains into service, including Airo Assistant Vice President (AVP) Celia Ann Pfleckl, Senior Director, Engineering Fleet Aquisition Derek Maier, and Siemens Mobility Project Manager Nathan Fletcher.

The one-minute video, which can be viewed here, promises to go deeper into “what makes these trainsets so important for our customers and the future of rail”.

Viewers can glimpse some of the onboard features that will enhance passengers’ journey, including comfortable seats with integrated lights and charging points.

Amtrak has ordered 83 of the Airo trainsets from Siemens Mobility, which is building them in California.

The operator originally ordered 73 Airo trainsets, but in 2023 increased this by ten because passenger numbers were increasing.

Commissioning the fleet forms part of its $8 billion investment in replacing its Amfleet, Metroliner and state-owned trains, which are reaching the end of their working life.

Last month, the first of the new Airo trains departed from Siemens’ facility in Sacramento, the state capital of California, for testing.

The new Airo trains offer an improved design, with Amtrak boasting that they have “a brighter, more open, and comfortable onboard experience”.

Features of the new trains include integrated propulsion and an Auxiliary Power Vehicle, which means that there is no longer a need for engine changes.

The Airo trains are bi-mode, and can operate from either diesel power or overhead electric power. This will enable them to be used in a more flexible way than their predecessors.

The first of the new trains will operate on Northeast Regional services, including Amtrak’s Virginia routes.

The operator believes that they will deliver “a more seamless and efficient journey” along the USA’s Northeast Corridor.
