South Western Railway has launched its first-ever May Rail Sale, offering 40,000 discounted tickets across the South West ahead of the May half-term break as demand grows for affordable and shorter UK getaways.

The sale follows new research commissioned by South Western Railway, suggesting that many Britons are prioritising affordability and convenience when planning half-term travel.

The promotion runs between Friday, 8 May, and Monday, 18 May, with customers able to book reduced advance fares for travel between Saturday, 23 May and Sunday, 31 May.

Tickets start from £6 each way to a range of leisure destinations served by the operator.

Destinations included in the sale include Southampton and Winchester, both available from £9 each way, Bournemouth and Weymouth from £12, Salisbury from £9, and Alton from £6, with attractions ranging from historic cathedrals and coastal resorts to the Watercress Line and the former home of Jane Austen.

Alongside discounted rail fares, customers can also claim a South West Railway Reward, offering savings on attractions and restaurants, including the London Eye, ZSL London Zoo and Street Burger by Gordon Ramsay.

More than a third of passengers surveyed, 34%, said lower costs were the main reason for opting for short UK breaks, while 33% cited reduced travel time. Ease of planning was highlighted by 29%, with 24% valuing the flexibility offered by domestic trips. The findings also suggest a potential shift away from overseas holidays, with 26% of respondents saying they would consider replacing one foreign trip with several UK breaks instead.

“Our first-ever big May Rail Sale is all about helping customers enjoy great value days out and short breaks across the SWR network during the half-term and May bank holiday period.

“Whether it’s a seaside escape, a cultural city break or a countryside adventure, there are so many fantastic destinations that can be reached easily, affordably and sustainably by rail.”

Matthew Winnie, South Western Railway’s Chief Customer and Commercial Officer.
