The Avon Valley Railway has faced mounting financial pressures in recent years amid significant increases in operating costs. In response, trustees, staff, volunteers and supporters have implemented a series of measures aimed at stabilising operations and strengthening governance.
This has included the appointment of new volunteer trustees, alongside the introduction of a revised and more flexible events programme. Visitor numbers have shown steady growth, supported by a particularly strong Christmas season in 2025 and successful half-term and Easter operations in 2026.
Having navigated this challenging period, the railway is now focused on long-term sustainability. Trustees have agreed to consolidate fundraising efforts into the ‘Fit for The Future’ campaign, with a target of £150,000, replacing multiple smaller appeals.

The campaign centres on four priorities:
- £30,000 to stabilise finances following cost increases.
- £40,000 to advance restoration work on Avonside locomotive ‘Edwin Hulse’ and the carriage fleet.
- £30,000 for investment in the permanent way to maintain a safe and serviceable track.
- £50,000 to enhance catering facilities at Bitton station, to increase revenue and improve the visitor experience on both running and non-running days.
Funds raised will fund the support of recovery, resilience and future growth. The target is to be met by the start of the Santa season, with the campaign also intended to rebuild confidence and demonstrate a clear, sustainable plan for the railway’s future.
For those wishing to give towards the campaign, donations can be made online.
