The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway held its first-ever Mixed Traction Day last Sunday, 17th May, at Woody Bay in Devon.
Throughout the day, Lyn, 2-4-2 steam locomotive, which is a replica built in 2017 of the original Lyn built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1898 for the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway, hauled trains on the normal steam service.

Diesel locomotives were also busy, with PILTON, a 150 hp 0-6-0 diesel mechanical locomotive built in 1952 for the Drewry Car Company, operated services to Killington Lane, and the railway’s Hunslet diesel locomotives Heddon Hall and D6652 were used for brake van rides.
The newest addition to the railway’s fleet, Hunslet diesel locomotive 001, performed shunting tasks.
Although the Exmoor tried to put a dampener on the day, operations continued normally, with visitors enjoying the railway’s many attractions.

Earlier this year, the fledgling Lynton & Barnstaple Railway featured in a Channel 4 television series ‘Britain’s Favourite Railway Stations’, and a six-week exhibition on the history of the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway was recently held at the Exmoor National Park Centre in Lynmouth.
