Although May is over halfway through, the Somerset and Dorset Railway (SDJR) at Midsomer Norton in Somerset has a full calendar of events for the rest of this month.

Sunday, 24th May is Dinosaur Day, where visitors can meet dinosaurs whilst travelling on the train, and find out how their keepers train the baby dinosaurs. Two trains will run with dinosaurs on board, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, but visitors should book to make sure of a seat.

Dinosaur Day events will take place in the area outside the museum at Midsomer North station. Morning events take place from 10.00 am until 1.00 pm, and afternoon events from 1.30 pm. The morning “Dino Express” will depart at 10.30 and the afternoon one at 2.00 pm.

On bank holiday Monday, 25th May, Cream Teas will be the order of the day in the RMB Buffet. Visitors can enjoy a scone with jam and clotted cream, and a cup of tea, but should book their tickets for them in advance.

Also on Monday, 25th May, visitors can ride in the veranda of the restored “Queen Mary” brake van. Rides will be available every 30 minutes from 10.30, hauled by a diesel shunter travelling over the full length of the line towards Chilcompton. Return trips last approximately 20 minutes, and there will be a lunch break from 12.30 to 2.00. Advance tickets cost £10 for adults and £5 for children aged 4-16, with on-the-day prices £12 for adults and £6 for children. Once purchased, visitors can have as many brake van rides as they like, subject to space being available.

Next Wednesday, 27th May, instead of riding in a brake van, visitors can experience what it is like to ride in a Wickham Trolley. Wickham Trolley Rides start at 10.30, and travel along the whole length of the line, towards Chilcompton.

Access to the Wickham Trolleys is not possible for people in wheelchairs, and space in the trolley means it can accommodate just six passengers each trip. Trolley rides last approximately 20 minutes and start and finish in the station at Midsomer Norton. Tickets cost £6 for adults and £3 for children aged 4-16@
