Pitlochry Station Bookshop has donated more than £500,000 to charity through the sale of donated books since opening in 2006.

Run entirely by volunteers under the ScotRail Adopt-a-Station scheme, the station bookshop has raised £504,918 for local, national, and international causes, including Cancer Research UK, Children’s Hospices Across Scotland, and Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance.

With no paid staff and rent-free premises provided by ScotRail, almost every pound raised goes directly to charity.

Originally launched to revive unused station space, the bookshop later expanded within the station as donations and community support grew.

This milestone was recognised at a reception in Pitlochry on 15 May 2026. 

“We are forever grateful to ScotRail for giving us the opportunity to raise funds for chosen charities. It’s been 20 years since they offered us what was then the station kiosk – subsequently expanded into our current premises – free of rent.

“It is thanks also to the dedication and hard work of our wonderful volunteers, and the loyalty of the local people who donate the books that we have been able to achieve this half million pounds of donations to our chosen charities.”
