The preserved Class 311 Electric Multiple Unit (EMU), 311103, is set to be unveiled in its Caledonian Blue livery.

The Glasgow Electric Group, in association with the ACMU Society, will be hosting a ceremony on the 30th May at 1 pm at the Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life.

2026 marks the 60th anniversary of Unit 311103, which is one of just two surviving Blue Trains and was withdrawn in 2002.

The Glasgow Electric Group, and more recently the ACMU Society, have been working hard to bring it back to its former glory, reaching the point of a full external repaint.

The unit will be unveiled in its iconic livery, and a special naming ceremony will also occur.

The chosen name will be kept secret until the 30th and honour a significant figure in railway history.

“The public instantly fell in love with them,”

“The Caledonian Blue was so striking that the name ‘Blue Train’ stuck for over 40 years, even long after they had been repainted into Strathclyde Orange livery.”

Darrel Hendrie, Chairman of the Glasgow Electric Group

While work continues on the interior to eventually allow the public back on board, this unveiling represents a massive achievement in preserving Scotland’s modern transport heritage.
