ScotRail has confirmed a series of timetable changes across its network from Sunday, 17 May 2026, introducing additional weekend services while revising some routes to accommodate engineering works and operational requirements. Fares are expected to remain frozen until 2027, as part of efforts to keep rail travel affordable alongside the changes.
Most of the extra services will operate at weekends. They include additional Saturday trains between Glasgow Queen Street and Anniesland via Maryhill, a new Sunday evening return service between Glasgow Central and Kilmarnock, and a second hourly Sunday service on the Levenmouth Rail Link.
Sunday local services between Aberdeen and Montrose, and Aberdeen and Inverurie, will also be enhanced, while more electric trains will operate on the East Kilbride line.

Further additions include more Saturday services to North Berwick, an extra 08:15 Ayr to Glasgow Central service on Sundays, and an additional 08:05 Edinburgh Waverley to Aberdeen departure. Edinburgh Waverley to Helensburgh Central services will also be supported by additional services on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Two late-night Borders Railway services, the 23:19 Tweedbank to Edinburgh and the 23:44 Edinburgh to Tweedbank, will be temporarily withdrawn to allow electrification works to proceed. Meanwhile, the 06:47 Kingussie to Inverness service will be withdrawn permanently following consistently low passenger numbers.
“We are introducing a number of timetable changes from Sunday, 17 May, the majority of which are on Saturdays and Sundays to meet the growing demand for leisure travel. These additional services will provide customers with more choice and flexibility, helping more people travel by rail for leisure, events, and days out.
“There are a small number of changes for operational requirements and planned engineering works so the Borders route can be electrified, making rail travel more sustainable. Customers should check their regular journeys before travelling, as some train times may have changed.”
Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director.
