Dapol has received the first decorated samples of its new OO Gauge models of the Great Western Railway’s (GWR) 2884 Class 2-8-0 steam locomotives.

Although the samples are unpowered, they provide a first look at the liveries that will feature in the upcoming production models. One of the models, numbered 2874, is exclusive to Dapol and will make a donation to the 2874 Trust for every 2874 model sold.

Before final testing can take place, another Engineering Prototype is required, which is still awaited. It is hoped to start production in September, which means models should be on sale towards the end of the year.

Following CAD simulations, conducted in collaboration with Dapol’s partner factory, it was shown that to achieve the prototype’s scale tractive effort, a diecast boiler is essential, meaning most of the model will now be of diecast construction.

The model will feature superb running characteristics and substantial haulage capacity, thanks to a fully compensated chassis with sprung centre driving wheels. The downside is that these enhancements, coupled with rising costs of manufacturing in the Far East, will result in substantially higher costs.

Two production runs are planned, with production run 1 comprising:

  • No. 2831 in lined Great Western Green.
  • No. 2804 in Great Western Green.
  • No. 3802 in BR Black with an early BR crest.
  • No. 2851 in BR Black with a late BR crest.
  • No. 2874 in Great Western Green.

Production run 2 will comprise:

  • No. 2854 in Great Western Green.
  • No. 2884 in Shirt Button Green.
  • No. 3819 in GWR Green.
  • No. 3850 in GWR Black.

Recommended Retail Prices are £220 DCC Ready, £255 DCC Fitted, and £330 Sound Fitted.

Other OO Gauge models recently announced by Dapol include a range of 0-4-0 saddle tanks and a GWR Churchward Toplight Corridor Coach.
