A Berkshire commuter is vying for the title of Britain’s longest-serving commuter.

Steve McCulloch has been commuting between Windsor and Eton Central and Maidenhead every day for 52 years. For over half a century, Steve McCulloch has walked to Windsor and Eton Central station, boarded his train, and headed to work. Regardless of the weather, be it pouring with rain or glorious sunshine, summer or winter, and through strikes, storms, and a global pandemic, Steve has turned up with his ticket in hand and faithful to the timetable.

Now, for the first time since 1st April 1974, Steve’s daily journey will be a happy memory as he retired on Thursday, 7th May. Making his 17-mile round trip between Windsor and Eton Central and Maidenhead every day, he is surely a contender for clocking up more miles on the same route than any other commuter in the country.

Steve is a self-confessed train enthusiast, and instead of being just a way of travelling to work, the train has been a source of genuine joy. During his time commuting, it has been something close to a second community, and as his retirement date crept closer, the team at Windsor and Maidenhead stations continued to greet him with the familiarity that only comes from years of daily contact.

In 2024, special celebrations were held at Windsor and Eton Central Station to celebrate its 175th anniversary.

“I have enjoyed the last 52 years of commuting and will continue to travel by rail as often as possible; it has been a privilege. Thank you.”

“Steve is everything we love about our railway. For 52 years, he has trusted us to get him to work and back, and that kind of loyalty means the world to us. The team at Windsor have watched him become part of the fabric of the station, and while we will miss seeing him on the platform every morning, we cannot think of anyone who has more thoroughly earned their retirement. We hope he will still come and see us from time to time, this time just for the pleasure of it.”
