The West Coast Main Line has been disrupted due to signalling systems being impacted by overnight thunderstorms.

The weather caused fuses to blow at Weaver Junction near Runcorn, and Network Rail is working to fix the issue.

While it is not fully confirmed, it is believed that lightning may have struck the equipment.

The equipment affected is where the line connects Liverpool and the North Wales coast.

This means that while repairs are carried out, services will be cancelled, delayed, or revised. Further to this, only one train per hour will run between Crewe and Liverpool, calling at Runcorn and Liverpool South Parkway.

Passengers should check journeys online before travel and should note that ticket acceptance is in place with Northern, Transpennine Express, and Avanti West Coast. Acceptance varies, so check with operators before travel.
