Network Rail is warning of disruption to travel while work begins on a £3.2 million project to strengthen the 132-year-old Pepper Road railway bridge in Leeds, ensuring its continued safe and reliable use by both trains and motorists.

The six-month scheme will see sections of the Victorian structure removed and replaced, with most work taking place during midweek days and weekend nights to limit disruption to rail passengers.

Originally built around 1840, the bridge was enlarged between 1888 and 1891 to form today’s four-arch structure. The bridge will remain closed to road traffic until the project is completed in late November 2026, with diversion routes signposted, and bus passengers advised to check journey details before travelling.

Pedestrian access will stay open throughout the works. Engineers will dismantle parts of the bridge before installing new pre-cast sections, along with a new parapet, drainage, waterproofing and road surface.

“This investment will create a stronger, more resilient bridge, ensuring it remains safe and fit for purpose for decades to come. It will support safer, more efficient and reliable rail journeys for both passengers and freight users, while also keeping the road safe for motorists and pedestrians.

“We’re sorry to residents and motorists for any inconvenience caused during this work. Our teams will do everything they can to minimise disruption.”

George Drum, Network Rail infrastructure director.
