Network Rail has been working to make stations safer across Scotland for the visually impaired.
They have completed a project to install tactile paving which can be felt by canes and underfoot, helping passengers to know where it’s safe to stand on the platforms.
The project has been ongoing since 2022, with Helmsdale being the first station and Ardgay being the last.
Network Rail and ScotRail want to make the network accessible for everyone and believe this is a step in the right direction.
“We welcome the news that this programme of tactile paving installations has now been completed across Scotland’s railway stations. For blind and partially sighted people, navigating a busy station can be one of the most stressful parts of a journey. Clear, consistent tactile paving makes a real difference by reducing uncertainty and helping people move around platforms more safely.
“With tactile paving now in place across Scotland’s stations, more passengers with sight loss can travel by train with confidence, independence, and peace of mind.”
James Adams, Director of RNIB Scotland
