West Midlands Railway (WMR) has been awarded ‘Excellent Employer’ status for its engineering apprenticeship scheme, becoming the first train operator to achieve gold accreditation.

The 12-month assessment, led by Next Gen Makers, draws on apprentice feedback to identify high-quality training providers.

Delivered with Birmingham Metropolitan College, WMR’s four-year salaried programme combines depot-based practical work with classroom learning.

Its 16 apprentices are primarily based at Tyseley depot in south Birmingham, developing mechanical and electrical rail skills. The recognition follows a £70 million Tyseley upgrade, completed in October 2025, enhancing facilities and equipment.

“This accreditation recognises our commitment to offering high quality training, so we can develop the next generation of rail talent and help young people launch their career with us.

“I started my career as an apprentice, so I know how valuable these opportunities are, and I am so proud that our team has achieved this gold standard.”

John Doughty, engineering director at West Midlands Railway.
