The Severn Valley Railway will once again turn back the clock this summer as its popular Step Back to the 1940s weekends return across 27-28 June and 4-5 July.

The event will see the entire heritage line transformed into a detailed evocation of Britain’s wartime home front, offering visitors an immersive historical experience.

Passengers can travel by steam train between stations, each presenting their own programme of entertainment.

At Kidderminster, a Hellcat tank and vintage vehicles will anchor a series of living history exhibits, including domestic scenes, an ARP post and an Anderson shelter.

Bewdley will host a wartime orchard celebrating ‘holidays at home’, alongside performances inspired by George Formby and Laurel & Hardy.

Arley will provide a more reflective element with a silhouette memorial walk, complemented by family entertainment and a recreated hospital train.

Highley and The Engine House will combine military displays with a wartime funfair, vintage market and dance sessions, while Hampton Loade and Bridgnorth will feature period traders, music and patrols by costumed Military Police.

Evening band concerts at Kidderminster on both Saturdays will round off proceedings, celebrating the era’s music with a finale singalong.

Re-enactors portraying servicemen, civilians and notable wartime figures will appear throughout, with Winston Churchill and Field Marshal Montgomery among those represented.

“Step Back to the 1940s is one of our most anticipated events of the year, and it’s easy to see why. From the moment you arrive, you’re transported into the sights, sounds and stories of wartime Britain. Whether it’s the powerful historical displays, the fantastic live entertainment or the chance to interact with our re-enactors, there’s something here for everyone to enjoy. It’s a truly immersive experience that brings history to life in a memorable and engaging way.”

Lewis Maddox, visitor engagement manager at the Severn Valley Railway.
