A brand new footbridge opened at Harlington station today (9th April), which has been designed to last 120 years.
The work began in May 2025, with the bridge itself being installed over the festive period.
The old bridge still needs to be removed, which will be done during existing improvement works taking place on the 18th and 19th April between Luton and Bedford.
The station’s car park will be closed to allow for the removal between the 12th and 24th April, but the station will remain open.
Alongside the bridge removal, the stations’ overhead line equipment will be improved. The equipment is currently attached to the old bridge, whereas it free runs under the new bridge.

The engineering work will see track renewals at Flitwick, further progress made on the Access for All project at Luton, and drainage work at Harpenden station.
The work means that East Midlands Railway services will be affected, with services being amended or using replacement buses. Buses will also replace Thameslink trains, with full details on how each operator will be affected available online.
“The footbridge project at Harlington is nearing completion and will improve safety and reliability for many years to come. The milestone of removing the old bridge is just one part of a packed programme of improvement work on 18-19 April.
“By co-ordinating this work with other key upgrades along the route, we’re keeping disruption to a minimum and helping passengers see the benefits as quickly as possible. We appreciate everyone’s understanding while these important improvements take place.”
