Heidelberg Materials UK has commissioned a new Class 08e electric shunting locomotive at Whatley Quarry in Frome, Somerset.
The Class 08e will be the first electric locomotive of its type to operate at a UK quarry, having been converted from a withdrawn diesel-powered shunter by Positive Traction.
The zero-emission locomotive supports the company’s target to reduce delivery transport-related scope 3 carbon emissions by 15% by 2030, measured against a 2019 baseline.
It forms part of a broader strategy to decarbonise logistics and enhance the use of rail-connected sites.

Powered by six Powerpod battery packs, the locomotive provides a total of 600kWh of energy storage. This configuration delivers up to a 50 per cent increase in tractive effort compared with its previous diesel form, improving operational performance while eliminating tailpipe emissions.
The locomotive has been named ‘Battery Bill’ following a competition among local primary schools. The winning pupil was invited to the quarry to unveil the name.
Whatley Quarry’s rail connection enables Heidelberg Materials UK to supply construction projects across London and the South East, reducing reliance on road haulage.
“We are delighted to provide Heidelberg Materials with its first zero-emission shunting locomotive, which will contribute to reducing both noise and emissions from rail related operations at Whatley quarry. We’d also like to thank the Heidelberg team for working closely with us to fully
