The Great Central Railway in Leicestershire is set to run a special Grandparents Weekend on 18-19 April, offering a discounted heritage rail experience for families across the Midlands.
The promotion is designed to encourage multi-generational visits, allowing grandparents, parents and grandchildren to spend a full day together exploring one of the UK’s most complete heritage railways.
Branded the ‘Best Day Out in Leicestershire’ at the 2025 Leicestershire Promotions Tourism and Hospitality Awards, the railway is providing half-price tickets for grandparents and £1 travel for children, with fares starting from £12 and including unlimited train travel throughout the day.

Visitors will be able to travel on both steam and diesel services while visiting restored stations along the line, experiencing a working railway environment that reflects different eras of British rail history.
A feature of the weekend is a series of behind-the-scenes locomotive shed tours led by the Boscastle Team, giving visitors access to operational areas not normally open to the public and offering insight into the maintenance of historic rolling stock.
Across the site, a range of food and drink options will be available, including cafés, traditional tea rooms and the 1960s-style Griddle and Buffet Car dining experience. The railway continues to position itself as a major regional attraction combining education, entertainment and hands-on heritage experiences.
Tickets must be booked online using the code GRANDPARENTS50 to access the offer.
