Greater Anglia train services will face disruption in early May due to station improvements between Bishop’s Stortford and Waltham Cross, and between Hertford East and Waltham Cross.

On Saturday, 9th, and Sunday, 10 May, rail replacement buses will replace trains on these routes while safety improvements are being carried out on the platforms at Sawbridgeworth, Cheshunt, and Broxbourne.

The safety improvements will include replacing damaged or worn coping stones on the platform edges, re-laying tactile paving that has become loose, repairing platform surfaces, and reinstating platform safety lines.

Work started at Sawbridgeworth in February, at the same time as Network Rail was carrying out engineering works in the area. However, additional work is required, which will be carried out at the same time as the forthcoming platform improvements at Cheshunt and Broxbourne.

Over the weekend of 9th/10th May, buses will replace trains between Bishop’s Stortford and Waltham Cross, and between Hertford East and Waltham Cross, but trains will continue to operate between Cambridge/Stansted Airport and Bishop’s Stortford.

Trains will also continue to operate between Waltham Cross and London, but only as a half-hourly service.

Passengers who would normally use the Stansted Express should, instead, travel via Cambridge and use Great Northern services to and from London King’s Cross.

Greater Anglia will provide extra staff to help passengers at the stations affected by the disruptions, but passengers intending to travel on these routes should check their travel arrangements before they leave, and allow more time for their journeys.

Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth were two stations on Greater Anglia’s network where staff and passengers donated unopened boxed Easter Eggs, Easter-themed chocolates and Easter activities/games for children at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow. They were also stations where food could be donated to help local food banks to help people in need in the run-up to Christmas.

“These works are designed to improve safety, accessibility and the long-term condition of the platforms while maintaining their existing layout and appearance. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and would like to thank passengers for their patience while this upgrade work takes place.”

Andrew Goodrum, Infrastructure & Major Projects Director, Greater Anglia
