New railhead lighting has been installed at 17 DB Cargo UK sites, under a national programme to improve safety and efficiency. Funding came from Network Rail’s Freight Safety Improvement Programme (FSIP) for trackside technology across the UK.
The system was trialled for three months at Margam Knuckle Yard to support roll-by examinations. These checks identify defects detectable only when trains are moving, including unusual sounds, loose fittings and dragging brakes.

The initiative follows DB Cargo UK’s role in the National Freight Safety Group’s Wagon Condition Programme, targeting better safety and maintenance of freight wagons and addressing condition and performance issues. A key workstream focused on improving train preparation.
Among the 17 locations, the new lighting can be found at Newport, Doncaster Belmon, Scunthorpe Trent and Anchor Sidings, Hoo Junction, Carlisle Kingmoor Yard, and Miller Hill, Scotland.
The technology was supplied by Ninehundred Communications Group and installed by DB Cargo UK’s Track Access Management Teams.
“These new track-side lights ensure our groundstaff have maximum visibility of the underside of the train, significantly enhancing their ability to spot any defects or problems before it enters the network.
“This will not only improve safety, it has financial and environmental benefits too – it will reduce the risk of potential breakdowns and expensive recovery, will prevent damage escalation and ultimately extend the life of our assets by enabling us to make proactive interventions.”
Gareth Lewis, Regional Operations Manager.
