Telford Steam Railway is set to celebrate 50 years of the Telford Horsehay Steam Trust with its inaugural Narrow Gauge Gala on 6th–7th June. The gala celebrates the trust’s pioneering narrow gauge work, which began in 1979 before standard gauge services.
The event will feature three locomotives: Steam Tram ‘Thomas Telford’, Ruston No. 229633, and, for the first time, ‘Taffy’, built by Alan Keef Ltd, will operate solo passenger and freight services and pair with ‘Thomas Telford’, creating a unique display of two Alan Keef vertical boiler engines in action.
Ruston No. 229633, arrived at the railway in 2022 and has now been fully restored, making its public debut with demonstration freight and passenger trips.

The gala will also showcase a brand-new restored freight set, including authentic MOD and RNAD wagons, recreating the narrow gauge freight once used at Horsehay Works.
Locomotives will operate in varied formations, double-heading, triple-heading, top-and-tailing, and solo runs, every 30 minutes across the weekend.
6 June hosts a special photo charter, giving participants exclusive line-side access, while 7 June features passenger rides, freight demonstrations, visiting standard gauge loco Avonside No. 1919’ Cranford’, and the Top Link Model Railway Exhibition.
Tickets are £10 for adults, £7 for children, £28 family for the gala, and £15 for a weekend pass covering both events. Book online for this unique steam celebration.
