Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has announced the launch of a major 2026 upgrade to boost the Bee Network’s tram capacity, reliability, and resilience.

The first phase runs over Easter weekend (3-6 April) at Trafford Bar and Deansgate-Castlefield, with track and rail replacement work affecting the Altrincham, Eccles, and Trafford Park lines. East Didsbury and Airport line services will operate only to Firswood.

Part of a £150 million investment, the work will improve tracks, vehicles, and the workforce, while temporary disruptions are expected across key stops, including Trafford Bar, Deansgate-Castlefield, Monsall, and Piccadilly Gardens.

From 30 March through autumn, a revised timetable will keep trams running every 15 minutes, with extra peak services every 7.5 minutes. More double trams will also boost capacity on busy routes.

The programme supports a new driver recruitment drive and includes deep cleaning and maintenance of trams temporarily out of service, enhancing overall reliability and passenger experience. Passengers can track updates via Bee Network channels throughout the works.

“Keeping our network safe, reliable and ready for the future is our absolute priority. This year’s programme is one of the most significant we’ve ever undertaken and will strengthen the whole network—our track, our trams and our workforce.

“Whilst we complete this work, we will introduce a temporary timetable change that will run between spring and autumn.

“We know that some of this work will mean temporary disruption, and I want to thank passengers for their patience while we get it done. By investing now, we can reduce faults, improve day to day reliability and make sure Metrolink can keep pace with the growing number of people who depend on it every day now and for the future.”

Ian Davies, Network Director for Metrolink at TfGM.
