Austin, an eight-year-old train enthusiast from Suffolk, had a day to remember at Liverpool Street station thanks to Network Rail Anglia. His passion for trains began during the 2020 lockdown, watching them from his back garden. As restrictions eased, his adventures expanded nationwide, shared with thousands of followers via his dad’s social accounts, Austin’s Rail Adventures.
The special trip came after a heartfelt post from Austin’s dad on X revealed that Austin had felt teased for his love of trains. The post sparked support from rail industry colleagues and fellow enthusiasts, who joined forces to give him an unforgettable experience.
Arriving with his tiger companion Stripey, Austin received a warm welcome and visitor passes, followed by a safety briefing for the busy match-day station. He explored behind the scenes, from the CCTV room to Liverpool Street’s history and operations.
At the Railway 200 exhibition, Austin tried his hand as a signaller, then toured the signal box to see real train operations.

The day ended with a ride in an assistance buggy, a cab tour of Class 720 and Class 745 trains courtesy of Greater Anglia, and a new soft toy friend, Greater Red, joining Stripey. Austin left inspired, ready for more railway adventures.
“Austin was in his element for the entire day, skipping around the station. He absolutely loves exploring the railway, and our journeys together even inspired me to take a new job as a train conductor. I keep thinking he will wake up one day and say he’s now into football and not trains, but he hasn’t yet and while he loves it, we’ll continue our adventures and social media.”

“When we heard about Austin and his adventures, we couldn’t wait to welcome him to Britain’s busiest station for an access-all-areas tour. His enthusiasm is truly infectious, and it was a pleasure to show him how all the various parts of the railway come together to deliver for passengers. Inspiring the next generation of railway workers is vital for the future of the industry, and we like to offer encouragement and insight wherever we can.”
Sara Ashmore Barrios, station manager for Network Rail at Liverpool Street.
