The Crewe Heritage Trust has been awarded £22,500 to restore green space and biodiversity.

They welcomed the Julia Rausing Trust following the award, which will go towards restoring the earlier landscape, prior to the railway, which was open fields.

They plan to create a new green corridor adjacent to the miniature railway, which will be divided into three sections.

An area known as Wildflower Way will be filled with native and pollinator-friendly plants, with Lavender Lane providing nectar sources while also providing vibrant colours and smells.

Lastly, a Butterfly Bank will be established to help butterflies and other insects thrive.

There will be bird boxes, bug hotels and a mini pond installed to create a range of new habitats for a range of species.

A range of pollinator-friendly plants will also be placed in six raised pocket gardens, with herbs and other edible plants, which will be in addition to the new station garden.

The locomotive workshop will be improved with a green roof and water butts to collect rainwater.

The trust aims to increase recorded wildlife numbers and the diversity present by over 50%, and is already recruiting Green Space Volunteers.

More information about the project and volunteering can be found on their website.
