East Midlands Railway (EMR) has added over 330 body-worn cameras for its staff, doubling the number of devices to strengthen safety for colleagues and passengers.
The cameras are widely used and act as a safeguard and deterrent, capturing clear evidence during ticket checks, busy periods, events, and other situations that may occur on the railway. Footage is stored securely for 31 days and can be shared with the British Transport Police if necessary.
The rollout of cameras for staff is part of East Midland Railway’s THINK campaign, aimed at reducing abuse towards staff and passengers. Research conducted by the Rail Delivery Group and the University of Cambridge has shown that body-worn cameras can cut the risk of assault by 47%.
Since April 2025, the British Transport Police have recorded 60 physical assaults and 136 instances of verbal assaults against East Midlands Railway staff alone. The increase in cameras sends a clear message: abuse will not be tolerated.
“Every day, thousands of people travel with us, and the vast majority do so safely and respectfully.
“Increasing the number of body-worn cameras is just one more way we are making our railway a safer place for everyone. Other measures include more specialist training, increased staff presence in key locations, new technology, and closer working with stakeholders.”
