ScotRail has started a procurement process for its new train fleet, with the operator looking at financing options.

The new fleet will have a minimum of 69 new trains, with an option for a further 37.

A procurement process is under way to find a manufacturer for the new trains.

The planned trains will operate on routes such as East Kilbride, Fife, Borders, and the Glasgow inner suburban routes, including services between Glasgow and Motherwell, Larkhall, Lanark, and Shotts.

“This is another exciting step on the journey to a new fleet of trains that will benefit customers in the years to come.

“This stage of the procurement process marks an important milestone as we look to secure funding for the building of the new trains.

“New trains will be a major step towards making ScotRail more reliable, comfortable, greener, and a more attractive choice compared to travelling by car.

  1. I think it’s about time that ScotRail desperately needs new rolling stocks to replace the ageing trains and perhaps Network Rail to electrify the Maryhill Line to Anniesland.

And to continue on with the Fife Circle line and Borders Line electrification (with plans to extend to Carlisle).
