The accessibility upgrades by Network Rail, carried out at Hertford North station, are moving forward at pace as work continues to make the station more welcoming and inclusive for all passengers.
The current project is part of a wider scheme named Access for All, which works to create more accessibility within UK train network. Other areas where stations have been given funding for works by the scheme include Greater Manchester, Birkenhead, and Derbyshire.
Works at Hertford North are focused on installing a new lift to platform 1, providing a step-free route for passengers with limited mobility, heavy luggage, or pushchairs. Platforms 2 and 3 already offer step-free access, so the new lift will ensure full accessibility across the whole station.
A major milestone in the project has recently been reached, with the lift shaft superstructure installed and cladding completed. To mark the progress, Josh Dean visited the site on Monday 9 February to see the improvements being made under the Access for All (AfA) programme.
Network Rail continues to work with industry partners to enhance stations across the network. Launched in 2006, the AfA scheme has already upgraded more than 200 stations across Britain, helping passengers move independently and comfortably throughout the rail network.
The works at Hertford North are expected to be complete in autumn 2026.

“The installation of the lift shaft superstructure marks a key step towards making Hertford North more accessible for all our passengers. We continue to work closely with industry partners to deliver these improvements as quickly as possible and we’re grateful to residents for their patience and support while the upgrades are being carried out.”
Nicola Butterworth, Network Rail senior sponsor.
“It’s extremely encouraging to see progress being made. Our community at Hertford North deserves full access to the station, which is why we were so pleased when the government confirmed funding for this scheme.”
Carl Martin, accessibility lead for Great Northern.
