The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is inviting members of the local community to their New Volunteers Open Day on Saturday 21 February, 10 am-2 pm, held in the Learning Centre Classroom on Platform 2 at Pickering Station.
From running trains, welcoming visitors, and even restoration work, volunteers are the heart of the railway.
This event offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at one of the UK’s most beloved heritage railways and showcases the wide range of volunteering opportunities available.
The New Volunteers Open Day has been created for anyone interested in or curious about joining the North Yorkshire Moors’ passionate and dedicated community of volunteers.
Doors are open to anyone, opening the door to learning new skills, meeting new people, and giving something back to the community.
Visitors can meet staff from departments including ticket offices, tearooms, shops, engineering, and station operations.
There will be events taking place throughout the day, including ticketing demonstrations, refreshment prep, retail insights, carriage tours, and the opportunity to sit in the Great Western Saloon.

“Our volunteers are the lifeblood of the NYMR, and we simply couldn’t do what we do without them. This Open Day is about opening our doors, sharing what goes on behind the scenes, and showing people just how rewarding volunteering can be. Whether you have a lifelong passion for railways or are simply looking for a new and fulfilling way to spend your time, we’d love for you to come along.”
Andy Woolley, Head of People at the NYMR.
