American passenger railroad operator Amtrak has introduced an expanded Flex Dining menu for travellers in sleeping cars on Amtrak’s long-distance services.
The revised menu offers new options for lunch and provides guests with a greater choice between lighter meals and the existing, heartier entrees. These double the number of options, where previously they were the same for both lunch and dinner.
Among the new options are popular items from Amtrak’s National Cafe menu. They include fresh items such as a Turkey & Cheddar Sub on a multigrain roll, a Ham & Swiss Sandwich on a pretzel roll with honey mustard, and a Fresh Greek Salad with feta cheese and balsamic vinaigrette dressing. There is also the classic Angus Cheeseburger and All-Beef Hot Dog. All options are served with a side of chips or a dinner roll.
There are currently five Amtrak long-distance trains where Flex Dining is offered as an option, including:
- Cardinal, between New York and Chicago.
- City of New Orleans between Chicago and New Orleans.
- Crescent between New York and New Orleans.
- Lake Shore Limited between New York/Boston and Chicago.
- Texas Eagle, on the part of the journey between Chicago and San Antonio.
The Flex Dining menu allows guests to choose the time when they want to eat, which can be in the dining car or by having an attendant deliver their meal to their room.
