Major disruption to London trains after ‘multiple incidents’

Southern and Thameslink are all suffering from severe disruption this morning due to a ‘number of incidents’.

There is a signalling fault between Norwood Junction and London Blackfriars, which means that fewer lines than usual can be used.

Major disruption is expected until the end of service.

12:48 – Do Not Travel notice lifted

Train operators have now lifted their Do Not Travel instructions, but major disruption is expected until the end of the day


12:43 – Gatwick Airport says airport remains open to public but urges passengers to plan ahead

Here is a statement from Gatwick Aiport regarding the rail disruption today: “We are aware of disruption to the rail network affecting some areas of South East England this morning. Gatwick Airport Station is operating, and passengers are still able to travel to and from central London and other destinations. However, they may experience delays. We will continue to monitor the situation and are liaising with our rail partners. We will update if the situation changes. Everyone coming to the airport by rail is advised to check with their rail operator before travelling, and to make sure they and allow plenty of time for their journey.”

A quick reminder to readers that Major Disruption is expected until the end of service today (4th February)


12:20 – Updated alterations

Thameslink and Southern has updated their service alterations

  • Luton – Rainham trains will only run between Dartford and Luton
  • Horsham – Peterborough trains will be diverted and will not call at London Bridge until approx 2pm and trains will call additionally at Earlswood and Salfords
  • Brighton – Bedford trains will not call at London Bridge until approx 2pm
  • Epsom – London Bridge services are suspended
  • Tattenham Corner / Caterham – London Bridge services will divert via an alternative route
  • Uckfield – London Bridge line will see a reduced service
  • London Victoria – West Croydon services are suspended.
  • Southern Metro services may be altered at late notice

Passengers should expect journeys to take between 45 and 60 minutes longer than usual.


09:52 – Line block announced

Between 10:30 and 11:00, a line block will take place in the Norwood Junction area, with services between Horsham and Peterborough, as well as Brighton and Bedford, diverting via Selhurst and skipping London Bridge.


09:50 – Thameslink additional station stops

Thameslink says that trains between Horsham and Peterborough will now call additionally at Earlswood and Salfords in both directions.


09:32 – Ticket acceptance updated

Ticket acceptance for both the signalling fault and derailment has now been updated.

Passengers can use tickets with Thameslink, Great Northern, East Midlands Railway, London Buses, London Underground, Elizabeth Line, London Trams, Gatwick Express, Southeastern, Brighton & Hove buses and Metrobus.


09:27 – Major disruption expanded

Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink are now advising of Major Disruption across the entire network. Major disruption is now expected until the end of service.


09:24 – Services also disrupted by a train derailment at Selhurst depot

The derailment is stopping trains leaving the depot to enter service. Please see more information here.


09:11Initial disruption advice

Horsham to Peterborough trains will be diverted via Selhurst and will not call at London Bridge in the northbound direction. Southbound trains will run as planned.

Brighton to Bedford trains will also divert via Selhurst and will skip London Bridge in the northbound direction.

Delays will affect trains between Bedford and Rainham, London Blackfriars and Sevenoaks, Luton and Orpington and St Albans City and Sutton, but these will continue to run as planned.

However, London Bridge – East Grinstead, Orpington – Luton, Brighton – Cambridge and Bedford – Three Bridges have been suspended and will not run until further notice.
