Next week, 180 metres of track will be replaced, along with bridge strengthening work at the River Plym railway bridge.

Network Rail will be carrying out work to allow more frequent, heavier trains to cross the bridge, which carries services between Totnes and Plymouth.

From the 21st February until the 8th March, engineers will be using 134 steel rail bearers and 24 FFU (a synthetic wood) railway bearers to strengthen the bridge.

To allow access to the bridge, a temporary dam will be installed, which will be done one-half at a time. While this takes longer, it ensures the river’s flow remains intact, without affecting the wildlife within it.

The Marine Management Organisation and the Environment Agency have given consent and will ensure there is as little disturbance as possible.

Buses will be in place to replace some services:

  • 21st to 27th February and 2nd to 8th March – buses will replace trains
  • 28th February and 1st March – Buses will be in place between Teignmouth and Plymouth, with trains running between Newton Abbot and Paignton.

Passengers are reminded to check before they travel online.

“The type of trains and amount of traffic now using our bridges means they need greater structural support, so this is vital work make sure they can continue to run safely for years to come.

“We’re sorry for the disruption but we’ll be busy in other areas as well to upgrade this heavily used section of railway and get as much work done as we can.

“The work is only possible by everyone across the railway industry working closely together and we’re very grateful for their support.”

Dan Parkes, Network Rail principal portfolio manager
