Train supply and services company Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) has signed a contract with the Basque transport operator Euskotren for the production of nine extra-long tram units for the Zabalgana line in Vitoria, the capital of the Basque Country in Spain.
The contract is valued at nearly €49 million, and includes €1.19 million for a driving simulator and nearly €4 million for the supply of spare parts required for vehicle maintenance. The planned delivery date for the vehicles is between 2028 and 2029.
The new trams will comprise seven modules with a total capacity of up to 400 passengers, and be 44 metres long, the same as seven extra-long units currently in service and three vehicles currently being built.
They will be designed with features for easy access, with a low-floor, be compliant with current regulations, and with signage that meets new universal accessibility standards, and colour coding will be used to identify priority seating areas. A new air conditioning system, which has been specifically designed for reliable operation during periods of extreme heat, will also be installed.
Among other contracts currently being undertaken by CAF is the refurbishment of the light metro units running in Athens, Greece, supplying new trams to Seville, Spain, and supplying 15 new trams to Marseille, France.
