A consultation has opened following proposals by Network Rail to permanently close Bordesley railway station in Birmingham.

Network Rail says that the main reason for the closure of the station is the construction of the Midlands Rail Hub scheme, which will provide a boost in capacity that will see an additional 300 trains a day.

The scheme would see two new chords built, and the junction for the chords will be built on the ground that Bordesley station currently occupies.

Bordesley station’s main purpose is to serve Birmingham City FC’s St Andrew’s stadium, and Network Rail says that at other times, the station has very light use and has limitations of capacity and poor access.

Bordesley is also in close proximity to Birmingham Moor Street, Small Heath and Adderley Park stations, as well as good availability of alternative transport systems.

Network Rail also says that Birmingham City FC is already planning to relocate its stadium, reducing the use of the station even further.

Currently, Network Rail wants Bordesley station to be closed on or after the 4th June 2029.

The consultation is now open, and you can respond via the DfT website.

    1. To misquote Marie Antoinette (who was probably misquoted originally): “Let them use cars”.
There is a jolly nice dual carriageway next to the development which has plenty of room on it if you look at the photo
