Avanti West Coast has begun trialling a pioneering timetable-optimisation tool, believed to be a world first for the transport industry, aiming to improve reliability during unplanned disruption.

Developed by the Centre for Modelling and Simulation (CFMS), the technology uses advanced data simulation to generate instant timetable recommendations when services are affected by incidents such as speed restrictions, line closures or severe weather.

With a click of a button, operational staff can input key variables and receive fully optimised alternatives designed to keep trains running and minimise disruption for customers.

The system not only supports faster, more informed decision-making, but also enables more accurate passenger information to be shared sooner. Each disruption scenario is saved, creating a library of ready-made response plans to strengthen future resilience.

The year-long trial will focus on Avanti’s Anglo-Scot and North Wales routes, with further exploration into how the tool could optimise crew and fleet deployment.

Backed by funding from the Small Business Research Initiative and delivered by Innovate UK, the innovation has also been shortlisted for The Engineer’s Collaborate to Innovate Awards, underscoring its potential to transform rail operations.

“Whilst timetable optimisation isn’t a new concept, I’m proud Avanti West Coast is leading the transport industry with this innovative technology that can help us to deliver a better service for customers when things don’t go as planned.

“Innovation can play a key role in shaping the future of the West Coast, as well as the wider rail industry. By working with the Centre for Modelling and Simulation on this ground-breaking tool, we have the means to make a massive difference in how the rail industry responds to unplanned disruption and keeps customers moving.”

Andy Mellors, Managing Director at Avanti West Coast.

Responses

  1. Will it actually change anything with the mentality of Avanti ? We shall see.. As currently if there is disruption north of Carlisle towards Scotland then Avanti just terminate their Euston / Glasgow services at Preston .. Can’t be bothered to run them onto Carlisle.
