Northern is encouraging people to apply for their engineering apprenticeship, which will hire up to 18 participants.

The three-year course will provide apprentices with mechanical and electrical engineering skills through both classroom and on-the-job training to achieve a Level 3 Engineering and Rolling Stock Qualification.

Apprentices will spend a year at Myerscough College in Preston and then be based at one of three TrainCare Centres in Newcastle, Manchester, or Liverpool, or at the Barrow-in-Furness light maintenance depot.

It’s a great opportunity as around 90% of apprentices go on to be employed by Northern.

Those applying should be 16 or older by the 1st September 2026, with 5 GCSEs.

“This is not work experience. This is an opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and experience you need to work on the railway and keep services running for customers, day in day out.

“We are looking to take on people who have a practical mindset and a genuine interest in engineering, so they can begin a rewarding and well-paid career in a safety-critical industry.

“We’re invested in building careers that last, creating opportunities to grow and develop as the railway changes.”

Raj Basi, Northern’s engineering director
