Wabtec Corporation has signed a contract with Indian Railways for the servicing of locomotives at the Siliguri Maintenance Shed in West Bengal, India.

Wabtec’s headquarters are in Pennsylvania, USA, but it currently employs 3,000 people in India, and is one of the country’s largest rail equipment manufacturers.

Indian Railways currently has a fleet of 250 Wabtec Evolution Series locomotives. These will all be serviced at the Siliguri Maintenance shed, where they will receive regular maintenance; the depot will also provide supervision, material and warehouse management, shed control, logistics, and remote diagnostics.

Indian Railways uses the Evolution Series locomotives for transporting food grains, fertilisers, cement, and containers along the strategic gateway to eight states in Northeastern India.

The contract to service locomotives at the Siliguri Maintenance Shed extends Wabtec’s servicing capabilities to eastern India, and by using Indian Railways’ existing infrastructure and staff, it creates a new service model in the country.

The Siliguri Maintenance Shed extends Wabtec’s partnership with Indian Railways and will be critical in maintaining the reliability and availability of locomotives used in the Northeast region of India and its gateway to Southeast Asia.

Wabtec already undertakes locomotive maintenance at Roza, Gandhidham, and Gooty depots, and with Siliguri, the company will be responsible for the service and maintenance of 1,000 Wabtec locomotives throughout India.

Besides its operations in India, Wabtec is a global operation. In January last year, the company secured a £200m order to supply Evolution series locomotives to Guinea in Africa, and in 24 it won an order to supply 30 Evolution Series locomotives to Brazil.

“The Siliguri shed represents a unique partnership where Indian Railways provides the infrastructure and manpower, while Wabtec leads the technical supervision to ensure the fleet meets the key performance metrics, including availability, reliability, and fuel efficiency. We are focused on implementing maintenance practices that drive faster turnaround for the locomotive fleet in the critical Northeast region.”
