Storm Goretti: Transport for Wales announces suspension of 7 railway lines

Transport for Wales is urging passengers to check before travelling as Storm Goretti moves across the country.

The rail operator has confirmed that 7 lines will be suspended, one already being suspended and 6 following later today.

The Cambrian Coast Line between Machynlleth and Pwllheli has been suspended and will be suspended all day wiht no replacement bus service due to road conditions.

Then, from 3 pm today (8th January), the following routes will be suspended:

  • Borderlands Line between Bidston and Wrexham
  • Llandudno – Blaenau Ffestiniog via Llandudno Junction
  • Shrewsbury – Swansea via Llandrindod
  • Carmarthen and Whitland / Pembroke Dock / Milford Haven / Fishguard Harbour
  • Maesteg and Ebbw Vale Town
  • Treherbert and Cardiff Central

A number of other lines are to be affected but no updates have been released on them yet.

  1. Oh dear, yet more “precautionary” cancellations of all trains in an area. This never used to happen – speed limits were just lowered, train drivers proceeded with caution, and trains were only completely cancelled if there was actual damage to, or blockage of, the line.
    I believe that Britain has become far too risk adverse. All travel has always carried an element of risk and, everyday, people assess the benefits of doing something against the risk of doing it.
    But now, if anyone perceives any risk at all, cancellation is the only answer because “safety is our number 1 priority”. Actually it isn’t or shouldn’t be – running trains should be the number 1 priority for all rail companies.
