Network Rail invested £18.3 million to create a new station in East Renfrewshire, which is now one step closer to completion.

This week, a new footbridge and lifts have been installed at the station, which is to be named Balgray after the nearby reservoir.

Once complete, the station will improve connections to and from Glasgow and encourage more people to travel by train to local destinations.

Construction began on the station in July 2025, following the plans being approved in 2024.

Since then, the car park and platforms have begun to take shape, and the most recent installation has made the site fully step-free.

In the next few months, they will be working on completing the car park with added electric vehicle charging spaces and installing cycle parking and a footpath to the nearby park.

The station remains on track for completion later this year.

“Strengthening rail connections in East Renfrewshire gives people another practical, reliable alternative to travelling by car. Better links mean shorter journeys, improved access to jobs and education, and simpler everyday travel.

“Installing the footbridge and lifts has really brought the station together. It means we can now start focusing on the details that will ensure it’s ready to welcome passengers later this year.”

Ashley McDonald, scheme project manager at Network Rail Scotland
