Passengers are advised to check their journeys today, as both Northern and TransPennine Express services have been affected.

Standedge Tunnel is currently unsafe for trains to use due to a fire, which means services between Rochdale/Huddersfield and Manchester Victoria will be severely delayed, cancelled, or diverted.

Disruption is expected until the end of the day or until repairs to the tunnel are completed.

Northern has stated that services between Leeds and Manchester Victoria will be cancelled in either direction.

They have advised that tickets can be used on TransPennine Express services between Manchester Victoria and Leeds, with their ticket restrictions removed for the affected areas.

Passengers can also travel within 2 hours before or after their cancelled service on any Northern, TransPennine Express and East Midlands Railway service.

TransPennine Express services are likely to have short-notice cancellations and alterations on the following routes:

  • Manchester Piccadilly – Huddersfield / York (Stopper service)
  • Manchester Victoria- Redcar Central
  • Liverpool Lime Street-Newcastle
  • Liverpool Lime Street-Hull

Trains are planned to divert via the Calder Valley, with diverted trains not calling at Huddersfield or Stalybridge.

Replacement transport has been requested until the line reopens, which is expected by tomorrow morning.

Ticket acceptance for other operators is in effect; however, passengers should check which services this applies to before travelling.

Passengers can check their journeys and make alternative travel plans online.
