A local primary school and nursery class has adopted the new railway station at East Kilbride in Scotland.

The station was redeveloped as part of the East Kilbride Enhancement Project. St Kenneth’s Primary School and Nursery Class were named as its official adopters under ScotRail’s ‘Adopt a Station’ scheme. Through the scheme, local schools, community groups, and charities can help to make their local station an inviting space and encourage people to take pride in it.

In collaboration with ScotRail, pupils and staff from the school will work on creative projects including artwork displays, gardening, and seasonal decorations, to help connect the new station with the local community. An added benefit is that by adopting the station, pupils will have the chance to learn about rail safety, sustainability, and the part public transport plays in their community.

Contractor AmcoGiffe, which carried out a £9 million redevelopment of the station as part of a major programme to upgrade the line between East Kilbride and Glasgow, provided planters and plants for the children to maintain.

Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, officially marked the completion of the £144 million East Kilbride Enhancement Project at an official event on Monday, 8th December 2025. Passenger services with modern Class 380 electric trains started running between East Kilbride and Glasgow Central on Sunday, 14th December 2025.

Jacqui Greenlees, St Kenneth’s Early Years Team Leader, commented that with little hands and big hearts, St Kenneth’s Nursery is proud to adopt East Kilbride railway station, and looks forward to making it bloom with vibrant colours and creativity, and to cultivating a sense of belonging and pride in our local area.

”We’re delighted St Kenneth’s Nursery has joined the ScotRail family through our ‘Adopt a Station’ programme. Their involvement will help bring the new East Kilbride station to life and strengthen the connections between the railway and the local community. The East Kilbride Enhancement Project is all about delivering a better, greener railway for future generations, so it’s fantastic to see young people getting involved and preparing to make their mark on the station.”
