Model railway manufacturer Hornby has announced the release of an OO Gauge Class 153 diesel multiple unit, finished in the distinctive livery of train operator Northern.

Unit No. 153360 is presented as it appeared during regular service in the north of England, which started to appear in the late 2000s.

At that time, the Northern franchise was owned by Serco-Abellio, but after it experienced operational challenges, the franchise was taken over by Arriva in 2016. Many units in the fleet retained their original livery into the early 2020s.

At one time, Northern Rail operated the largest fleet of Class 153 units in the country, extending from Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, the Settle and Carlisle line, Leeds and Sheffield in Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire.

The Hornby model depicts 153360 in an Arriva livery, which represents the single-car unit as most people would remember it, and has an eye-catching glossy finish. It is supplied fitted with NEM couplings, and is DCC ready with a 21-pin decoder socket for easy upgrading to HM7000 digital operation by the addition of a 21-pin decoder.

The Class 153 No. 153360 costs £169.99, and further details can be found here.

Just before Christmas, Hornby launched a range of O and OO gauge wagons adorned with a livery depicting The Beatles, and reviewed its most popular products of 2025.
