February will see work at Hindley station to make it more accessible for everyone.
The project is due to cost around £6.5m and will see two lifts installed to make it step-free to and from the platforms for the first time.
A new footbridge will also be built from the booking hall to provide access to platforms 1 and 2.
Transport for Greater Manchester is working with Network Rail and Northern to keep the station open throughout the work, which will also see new lighting and CCTV installed.
This work follows on from similar work completed at Daisy Hill and Irlam stations in 2025, with work already underway at Bryn station. Reddish North and Swinton are also due to get similar work along with Flowery Field, Newton for Hyde and Levenshulme.
A new travel hub is also proposed for Hindley, which will help more people access the Bee Network, providing a park and ride facility with 40 parking spaces, including EV charging points and blue badge spaces.
“Everyone should be able to use public transport easily, and the number of inaccessible train stations across Greater Manchester is an historic legacy that we are working hard to correct.
“Over a three-year period, we will deliver upgrades at ten stations – twice as many as in the past decade – so that two-thirds are step-free by spring 2028.
“It’s great to start the new year with confirmation that work will get underway at Hindley in just a few weeks’ time, enabling more people to use the rail network and unlock the city-region’s growing potential.”
Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester
