In the next few months, work will start to make Wandsworth Town station in southwest London fully accessible.
Network Rail and South Western Railway (SWR) will start work in February to make the station fully step-free, which will improve access for passengers travelling with luggage, who have reduced mobility, and parents with pushchairs. The station is between Clapham Junction and Putney, and will be the latest South Western Railway station to receive accessibility improvements, which includes installation of new lifts to all platforms. It is South Western Railway’s 15th busiest station, with over 3.75 million people using it between April 2024 and March 2025.
The Department for Transport (DfT) is funding improvements through its Access for All scheme, which is designed to provide obstacle-free routes between station entrances and the platforms.
Working in partnership with Wandsworth Council, a modern second entrance with new ticket barriers will be constructed at Odyssey Way to improve access from the north side of the station. During February, hoardings and ducting will be installed in preparation for the work, followed in April by the construction of a temporary scaffold bridge.
Piling to provide foundations for the new lift will be carried out between May and November 2026. The lift shaft will be installed in February 2027, and all work is scheduled for completion by summer 2027.
The station will remain open throughout the work, but there may be some changes to South Western Railway services; these will be advertised as work progresses. There may also be a need to temporarily close some entrances and platforms while construction is underway.
“We are looking forward to starting work to improve access at Wandsworth Town station. This is a busy and growing station, and these improvements will make a real difference for passengers who currently face barriers using the railway.”

Maybe other SWR stations in Southwest London could be upgraded with lifts/ramps and better step-free access. Good to see Wandsworth Town station to get the upgrade to become step-free accessible station.
