Last week, Network Rail was out in the Somerton area, replacing drainage on around 600 metres of line.

New modern components were installed along with 800 tonnes of shingle and 1,400 tonnes of ballast.

New inspection chambers were installed to allow easier access, and other maintenance and inspection work was carried out.

While the work was carried out, buses replaced trains between Castle Cary and Taunton to ensure safety; however, the work finished overnight, and trains have resumed this morning.

“The work we have completed in the Somerton area over the past week is vital maintenance. Our new drainage system will take rain water away from the tracks much more efficiently, helping to reduce the risk of flooding in the future.

“We’d like to thank passengers and residents for their patience throughout this period. This kind of maintenance is essential to ensure the continued safe and reliable running of the railway.”

Jason Pankhurst, Senior Programme Manager for Network Rail
