Siemens Mobility has recruited more apprentices for training at its Goole Rail Village in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

There are now 35 entry-level trainees across the site, and Siemens Mobility is supporting 175 apprenticeships at 20 other locations across the UK and Ireland, from Level 3 to Level 6 in engineering, manufacturing, and operations.

At the Goole Rail Village, the apprentices are involved in building new trains for Transport for London’s Piccadilly line, with 80% of the new trains being built at the site. A future battery bi-mode train for the UK will also be assembled at Goole.

During their training. Apprentices will experience various disciplines, including mechanical fitter, engineering fitter, maintenance support, manufacturing technician, and warehouse management. Their practical experience will also be combined with theoretical training at York College.

One Level 3 Apprentice Mechanical Fitter is Rhys Penistone, aged 17, whose father also works for Siemens Mobility.

Rhys said he has always learned best by getting hands-on and doing practical work, and thinks an apprenticeship offers a good balance, enabling him to learn on the job while studying at college.

His Dad was a big inspiration for him, and having been interested in mechanics from a young age, he grew up helping his Dad to fix things such as motorbikes and go-karts, and knew he wanted to pursue a career in this area.

Another Level 3 Engineering Fitter Apprentice is Maisie Eastwood, aged 16, from Goole. The main thing that attracted her to Siemens was the opportunity to work on London Underground trains. Coming from Goole, it’s amazing to have Siemens on her doorstep, and that this small town is playing such a big part in the transport network.

As well as the apprenticeship interns, Siemens Mobility has been inspiring young school children in the Goole area about careers in engineering through a partnership with the charity, Primary Engineer.

“We’re committed to creating a powerful pipeline of talent and a lasting legacy of skills for our business and the wider industry. That’s why we have brought on board apprentices from the early days of the Goole project and continue to do so. This latest intake at Goole further contributes to our ongoing investment in developing young talent to help shape the future of the UK rail industry.”

“Apprentices in our earlier cohorts are already making a significant impact in their teams, here at Goole and elsewhere in the business, and it’s fantastic to see their development and progress since joining us. We’re excited to support our newest recruits as they begin their journey, and we can’t wait to see what they all go on to achieve.”
